Marriage By Rabbi Held To Be Invalid
He Was Not A British Subject at Time He Performed Ceremony
Globe, January 15, 1925
(Canadian Press, Montreal) — Because a rabbi who conducted the ceremony was not a British subject, Mr. Justice Bruneau, in the Superior Court today, handed down judgment annulling a marriage conducted ten years ago between Dame Sarah Klasmer and Philip Lefschetz.
Dame Klasmer declared she had been married to Philip Lefschetz here on June 25, 1914, by Rabbi Yudelson of the Kadescha congregation.
The rabbi, it was alleged, was not a British subject when he conducted the ceremony, and consequently was not competent to keep registers of civil status conferring upon him the right to conduct a valid marriage ceremony. ♦
